Renowned Pakistani playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar’s recent kidnapping sent shockwaves across the nation. The dramatic events that unfolded have left many questioning the safety of public figures. In a surprising turn of events, the police have arrested 12 suspects in connection with the crime. But who are these individuals, and what led them to target the esteemed writer?

On July 15, Pakistani known TV anchor and playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar was kidnapped in Lahore. These incidents transpired when a woman going by the name of Amna Urooj got in touch with Qamar and identified as a fan wished to audition for a drama. She agreed to see him at a certain place and he was attacked by armed men.

The police report filed by Qamar narrated that he was locked in a room and it was Amna Urooj and her accomplices who assaulted him; his mobile phone, cash, ATM card, and other valued items were taken by the attackers. The two proceeded to ask for an extra Rs 10 million to free him in a second kidnap attempt. When Qamar disobeyed their demands and did not offer payment, they began to strangle him, before eventually leaving him at a remote area of Nankana Sahib.

Qamar narrated his story and said that he was blindfolded and moved from one location to another and physically and mentally tortured. The suspects had erased certain data in their mobile phones to conceal their misdeeds, but the police was able to retrieve the erased data that led to the arrest of the suspects.

The decisive criminal, Amna Urooj, who planned Qamar’s kidnapping, called and sent him messages via phone and picture messages for 10-15 days prior to the kidnapping event. Her way of operation was to pose as a British citizen and make friends with the persons she targeted before stealing from them alongside her accomplices.

The police arrested 12 suspects in connection with the kidnapping, including the prime suspect, Amna Urooj. Amna, a resident of Gujranwala, is a repeat offender with a history of committing similar crimes. She is said to have enticed Qamar into the trap and fanning the kidnap.

The other suspects include Mamnoon Haider, Qazi Zeeshan Qayyum, Ibrahim Javed Iqbal, Hafiz Tanveer Ahmed, Half Nigerian Falaksher Qaiser Abbas Rashid Ahmed Mian Khan Babar Ali Shumaila Bibi & Maryam Shahzadi. First of all, it has been established that the involved suspects had been planning similar incidents and was targeting influential personalities to scare them into paying a certain amount of money.

While the police investigation has not revealed a specific motive for Khalilur Rehman Qamar’s kidnapping, some speculate that it may be related to his controversial views on women. Qamar has been vocal about his opinions on women’s roles in society, which has led to criticism and backlash. Notably, a previous incident on Samaa TV where he argued with a female anchor sparked widespread debate. It’s possible that the suspects, led by Amna Urooj, targeted Qamar due to his perceived stance against women, but this remains speculative at this point.
